A rotary petrol engine developed by the
German engineer Felix Wankel (1902-) in the
1950s. It operates according to the same
stages as the four-stroke petrol engine
cycle, but these stages take place in
different sectors of a figure-of-eight
chamber in the space between the chamber
walls and a triangular rotor. Power is
produced once on every turn on the rotor. The
Wankel engine is simpler in construction than
the normal piston petrol engine, and produces
rotary power directly (instead of via a
crankshaft). Problems with rotor seals have
prevented its widespread use.
